Why an AV Company and an Interior Design Consultancy Actually Fit Together

A couple of weeks ago we announced that we had acquired Squaredot, a workplace interior design consultancy, and we sat down with Kris Krokosz, Squaredot's managing director, to talk through it properly on camera. It felt like the right way to introduce him to anyone who has not come across Squaredot yet, and to get into some of the detail behind why this partnership actually works, rather than just the headline.

Data With a Human Side

One of the first things Kris talked about was how Squaredot approaches a project. The old fashioned way, as he put it, is people and human centric thinking: understanding what people are actually doing day to day, and what a business genuinely needs from its space. That only gets you so far on its own, though, because it needs to sit alongside data that keeps updating, objective information that can be measured early, at the feasibility stage, and then used to shape the design from that point onwards. Squaredot still leans on online surveys, interviews and workshops too, because that is how sentiment gets captured, not just numbers. It is a balance between the tech side of it and the human centric side of it, keeping the soft touch rather than reducing a workplace down to a spreadsheet.

The Front End of the AV Food Chain

Chris put it plainly when we talked about why an AV company and an interior design consultancy actually fit together. The two businesses are related in terms of the industry they sit in, even though AV tends to come further down the process than design does. Squaredot sits right at the front end, if you can call a construction project a food chain, and the thinking behind what happens inside a meeting room, a break area or a conference hall has to start right at the beginning. Get the ingredients right from day one, and everything that follows is easier to get right too.

Answering the Question We Keep Getting

We know some people will hear about an AV company acquiring an interior design consultancy and wonder what the two have to do with each other. The answer is that they sit closer together than most people assume. Both businesses are involved in shaping what a workplace becomes before anyone actually moves into it, and both are trying to answer the same underlying question, which is what the people using that space will actually need it to do. Bringing Squaredot into SPOR Group means we can answer that question properly, from the earliest survey through to the technology that eventually goes into the room.
