What is a UC platform and which one is right for your business? The honest guide to unified communications, Teams, Zoom, Webex and Google Meet explained.
Chris Gore | Updated 2026

UC stands for Unified Communications. A UC platform is the software that brings together video calling, voice calling, messaging, file sharing and meeting scheduling in a single application. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Webex and Google Meet are all UC platforms. They are the technology that your meeting rooms need to be certified for in order to work as intended.
The choice of UC platform matters more than most organisations realise when they are planning a meeting room project. Every piece of hardware deployed in the room needs to be certified for the platform the organisation runs. Deploying Teams-certified hardware in a Webex environment produces a room that technically functions but does not deliver the native experience the hardware was designed for. For the specific platform comparison, read Webex vs Microsoft Teams.
The Four Main UC Platforms
Microsoft Teams
The dominant UC platform in UK enterprise. Part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, which means it integrates natively with Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive and the rest of the Microsoft stack. Microsoft Teams Rooms is the certified room system platform that runs on dedicated hardware from manufacturers including Logitech, Yealink, Poly, Crestron and others. If your organisation runs Microsoft 365, Teams is almost certainly the right platform.
Zoom
The platform that became a household name during COVID. Zoom Rooms is the certified room system equivalent of Microsoft Teams Rooms. Strong in the US market and in organisations that standardised on Zoom during the pandemic. Zoom hardware is certified separately from Teams hardware, a Teams-certified device is not the same as a Zoom-certified device, though many manufacturers produce devices certified for both.
Cisco Webex
The enterprise and security-focused platform. Strong in financial services, government and healthcare where security and compliance requirements are non-negotiable. Webex hardware — Webex Board, Room Kit, Room Bar — integrates most deeply with the Cisco Webex platform. For the hardware comparison, read Cisco Room Kit vs Plus vs Pro.
Google Meet
The Google Workspace equivalent. Integrates natively with Google Calendar, Gmail and Drive. Less common in corporate meeting room deployments than Teams or Zoom but relevant for organisations standardised on Google Workspace. Google Meet hardware certification covers a range of devices from Logitech and Poly.
How to Choose the Right UC Platform
Match the platform to the ecosystem you already run
The most important factor is not features. It is ecosystem fit. If your organisation runs Microsoft 365, Teams is the right platform. If you run Google Workspace, Meet is the right platform. Choosing a platform that does not integrate natively with the productivity suite your organisation uses creates friction that never fully goes away.
Consider where your external contacts are
Video calls happen between organisations. If the majority of your external meetings are with people on Teams, running Zoom creates a guest experience every time. Most platforms support joining calls from other platforms but the experience degrades compared to native. Understanding where your clients and partners predominantly sit informs the platform decision.
Think about the room hardware implications
Platform choice determines which hardware can be deployed in your meeting rooms as a native certified experience. Teams-certified hardware delivers the full Teams Rooms experience. Webex-certified hardware delivers the full Webex experience. Hardware that is not certified for your platform will work but without the native integration that makes the room experience seamless.
Consider security and compliance requirements
For organisations in regulated industries, financial services, legal, healthcare, government, the security and compliance features of the platform matter significantly. Cisco Webex has the strongest enterprise security credentials. Microsoft Teams is widely deployed in regulated industries and has strong compliance features. Zoom has improved significantly but is less common in the most heavily regulated environments.
UC Platform and Meeting Room Certification
Every major UC platform has a certification programme for meeting room hardware. Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms and Webex Rooms are the three main certified room system categories. A SPOR Group site survey always confirms the organisation's UC platform before any hardware is specified, because the platform determines which devices can be deployed to deliver a native certified experience.
Deploying non-certified hardware in a meeting room is not always a disaster, the call will connect, but the full integration of one-tap join, calendar sync, automatic camera framing and room status reporting into the UC platform requires certified hardware running on the correct firmware.
SPOR Group deploys Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms and Webex certified meeting rooms across the UK and globally. Every project starts with a platform assessment before any hardware is specified. Use the AV brief generator to produce a structured brief that includes your UC platform, or the AV report quiz to get independent guidance on what your rooms actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UC platform?
UC stands for Unified Communications. A UC platform brings together video calling, voice calling, messaging, file sharing and meeting scheduling in a single application. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Webex and Google Meet are the main UC platforms used in UK businesses.
Which UC platform is most commonly used in UK businesses?
Microsoft Teams is the dominant UC platform in UK enterprise, driven by widespread adoption of Microsoft 365. Zoom is common in organisations that standardised on it during the pandemic. Cisco Webex is prevalent in financial services, government and healthcare. Google Meet is used in organisations running Google Workspace.
Does it matter which UC platform I choose for my meeting rooms?
Yes significantly. Every piece of meeting room hardware needs to be certified for the platform the organisation runs to deliver the native room experience — one-tap join, calendar sync, automatic camera framing and room status reporting. Non-certified hardware will connect calls but without the full integration.
Can I use Teams hardware in a Zoom environment?
Some devices are certified for both Teams and Zoom and can be switched between platforms. However most devices are certified for one platform as their primary experience. Deploying Teams-certified hardware in a Zoom environment or vice versa produces a degraded experience compared to using platform-native certified hardware.
